CUSTOM ELECTRIC NITROGEN PIPELINE HEATER

Electric Nitrogen Gas Heater

Custom electric pipeline heating equipment for nitrogen preheating, purging, blanketing, drying and inert-gas process systems.

The Electric Nitrogen Gas Heater is an industrial inline electric heating unit designed to heat nitrogen flowing through a closed pipeline. It is selected according to nitrogen flow, operating pressure, inlet temperature, required outlet temperature, cleanliness requirement and allowable pressure drop.

Heating power, pressure-bearing construction, wetted materials, element sheath, connection standard, control method and safety interlocks can be engineered according to the process. The heater can be supplied alone or with a control cabinet, instruments, valves and system piping.

Product Overview

The Electric Nitrogen Gas Heater is used where nitrogen must be preheated before purging, blanketing, drying, heat treatment, regeneration or another controlled industrial process. Nitrogen is inert, but heater design still requires confirmed flow, pressure, temperature and cleanliness conditions.

A typical unit includes a pressure-bearing shell, inlet and outlet nozzles, removable heating element bundle, terminal box, temperature sensors, insulation and supports. Optional scope can include flow and pressure instruments, control cabinet, valves, piping and skid frame.

Compared with a general process-gas heater, this page focuses on nitrogen service and the requirements for cleanliness, stable outlet temperature and material compatibility. It is also different from a compressed-air heater because oil carryover and moisture conditions may be different.

Xiangyuan Machinery can supply a standalone heater, a heater with control cabinet, or a factory-assembled nitrogen heating package prepared for integration with the customer’s nitrogen source and process equipment.

Structure, Materials, Control and Safety

Heating element assembly for electric nitrogen gas heater

Structure of the Heater

The heater normally uses a cylindrical pressure-bearing shell with nitrogen inlet and outlet nozzles, a flanged heating element bundle and an external terminal box. The bundle arrangement is selected from flow velocity, heat-transfer requirement and allowable pressure drop.

An outlet temperature sensor is normally included, while inlet, element-sheath or body temperature sensors can be added where required.

For packaged projects, flow and pressure instruments, isolation valves, control cabinet, piping and skid frame can be integrated and factory assembled.

Materials and Customization

Material selection depends on nitrogen purity, moisture, trace contaminants, pressure and outlet temperature. Carbon steel may be suitable for some general services, while SS304 or SS316L can be selected when cleanliness or corrosion resistance is more important.

Element sheaths can be selected from stainless steels or nickel-based alloys according to surface temperature and process conditions. Cleaning, internal finish and contamination-control requirements should be stated during selection.

The heater can be customized in shell diameter, flange rating, element arrangement, terminal-box direction, insulation, mounting orientation and instrument connections.

Control System

PID control with SCR power regulation can provide modulating output for stable nitrogen temperature. Staged contactor control can be used when the process permits step regulation.

The control cabinet can receive signals for nitrogen flow, pressure and upstream-equipment status. Local/remote operation, HMI and PLC or DCS communication can be included.

Control logic can prevent heater energization without confirmed nitrogen flow and can trip the heater on over-temperature, low flow or abnormal pressure.

Safety Protection

Typical functions include independent over-temperature protection, low-flow interlock, pressure monitoring, phase-loss and phase-sequence protection, earth-leakage protection, grounding and emergency stop.

Although nitrogen is inert, it can displace oxygen in enclosed spaces. Site ventilation and nitrogen-system safety remain part of the user’s overall plant design rather than the heater alone.

For hazardous-area projects, explosion-proof terminal-box and heater configurations can be evaluated according to the confirmed site classification. Certification requirements for the destination market should be confirmed before quotation and final design.
