Explosion-proof electric air heater for hazardous-area process air

Product Overview

The Explosion-Proof Electric Air Heater is an industrial air-heating unit for classified areas in oil, gas, chemical and related plants. It can be used in process-air lines, drying systems, ventilation sections or equipment packages where explosion-proof electrical construction is required.

A typical unit includes a heater housing or pressure-bearing shell, electric element assembly, explosion-proof terminal box, temperature sensors, insulation, inlet and outlet connections and mounting supports. The control cabinet can be located in a suitable area or supplied in an appropriate design according to project scope.

For hazardous-area applications, site classification, gas group, temperature class, maximum allowable surface temperature, ambient conditions and terminal-enclosure requirements are treated as core design inputs.

The heater can be supplied as a standalone unit, with a matched control cabinet, or as part of an integrated process-air heating package.

Structure, Materials, Control and Safety

Heater structure and heating assembly of Explosion-Proof Electric Air Heater

Structure of the Heater

The heater can use a duct-type casing or a cylindrical inline shell depending on airflow and pressure. The electric heating elements are mounted inside the flow path and connected to an explosion-proof terminal enclosure.

The structure can include fan or duct transitions, element support plates, temperature-sensor ports, differential-pressure connections, insulation, cladding and maintenance supports. Cable entries and terminal layout are arranged for the site installation.

The enclosure, element spacing and sensor positions are coordinated with airflow and the required temperature class. The final arrangement is confirmed from the hazardous-area documents and process duty.

Materials and Customization

Housing and element materials are selected from air composition, humidity, corrosive components, outlet temperature and site environment. Carbon steel, SS304, SS316L, SS310S, Incoloy 800/840 and selected alloys can be considered where suitable.

Explosion-proof terminal enclosure and cable-entry components are selected according to the confirmed electrical and area-classification requirements. Material options do not replace the need to confirm the temperature class.

The heater can be customized in power, connection, housing shape, element arrangement, insulation, mounting and maintenance-removal direction.

Control system and instrumentation for Explosion-Proof Electric Air Heater

Control System

PID temperature control, SCR power regulation, staged control, PLC logic and HMI can be supplied according to project needs. Control equipment can be installed in a safe area or designed according to the confirmed installation conditions.

Outlet-air temperature is normally the main control signal. Inlet temperature, element sheath temperature, airflow, fan status and differential pressure can be monitored.

The control logic can include fan-running confirmation, airflow permissive, purge or ventilation sequence, staged heater energization, outlet-temperature control, independent high-limit shutdown and delayed fan stop after heater de-energization. The control cabinet can be remotely installed outside the hazardous area when required.

Safety Protection

Typical protection can include independent over-temperature protection, confirmed-airflow or fan interlock, pressure or differential-pressure monitoring, phase-loss and phase-sequence protection, ground-fault protection, protective grounding and emergency stop.

The heater must not be energized until the required airflow is confirmed. The control sequence should prevent operation with a stopped fan, closed damper or blocked flow path and should coordinate heater shutdown with the fan or upstream process equipment.

Relevant explosion-proof products have obtained Chinese explosion-proof certification Ex db IIC T1–T6 Gb. The exact configuration and marking are confirmed according to the project specification and hazardous-area classification.
